FAQs
1. What does a typical session look like?
While the technique stays consistent, each session brings unique experiences and healing, varying from person to person and session to session.
We’ll start with explanation and demo of the technique which may/may not be followed by some warm ups. Then, you’ll engage in active breathing for 60-70 minutes—though it will feel much shorter! Afterward, we’ll transition to normal nose breathing for integration.
This is where the magic unfolds. Your body will feel open and expanded, deeply connected to your highest self, and receptive to insights, messages, or pure bliss.
After the session, you may feel tender and open. Be gentle with yourself in the days that follow—self-care and kindness are key.
2. Can I practise breathwork if I have a medical condition?
If you have any medical conditions or are currently on medication, please consult your doctor before engaging in Breathwork. It’s also recommended to seek advice from your healthcare provider (including a mental health professional) if you’re uncertain whether Breathwork is suitable for you.
Breathwork can lead to strong physical and emotional releases, making it unsuitable for individuals with a history of cardiovascular issues (such as angina, heart attacks, or high blood pressure), glaucoma, retinal detachment, osteoporosis, recent major injuries or surgeries, severe mental illness, schizophrenia, seizure disorders, or those taking significant medications, including blood thinners.
Additionally, Breathwork is not recommended for those with severe mental illness, seizure disorders, or a personal or family history of aneurysms. Pregnant individuals should avoid Breathwork unless approved by their primary care physician. If you have asthma, bring your inhaler and consult both your doctor and the Breathwork facilitator before participating.
3. What can I except to feel in a session?
Breathwork is energy work. As you begin the breath pattern, your body may feel alive with energy. It’s common to encounter resistance—stuck or stagnant energy—that may manifest as tightness, tension, or emotional releases. The key? Keep breathing to move that energy.
Common sensations during a session:
- Temperature changes: Fluctuations from hot to cold as fear is released.
- Body stiffness: Tightness in areas like the mouth, hands, arms, legs, or hips where energy blockages often reside.
- Tingling: A sign of energy moving, either throughout the body or in specific areas.
- Movement: Shaking, vibrating, or spontaneous movements—listen to your body!
- Releases: Crying, laughing, or screaming as energy is released.
- Muscle tightness: Temporary knots or soreness as energy flows; this usually passes quickly.
- Emotions: Surface-level emotions may arise as deeper fears and anxieties are released. If it feels too intense, soften your breath—it won’t “ruin” the session.
Your experience will vary each time and is unique to you. All sensations are temporary, and your breath is the tool to move through them. If it becomes overwhelming, simply return to a relaxed breath.
Tip: Use resistance or reactions as an opportunity to connect with your body. Ask your heart what it’s ready to release or offer it reassurance as energy moves through. Trust the process—it’s all part of the journey.
4. What if I'm nervous about trying breathwork?
Breathwork isn’t about uncovering all your trauma at once or diving headfirst into itThink of it like a flower blooming: we gently peel back layers of old beliefs or “untruths” to reveal your core self.
We create a safe, nurturing space for you to explore who you truly are and who you’re meant to be. You’ll be supported and held throughout the entire process.
One of the biggest attractions of breathwork is that it puts you in charge of your healing. You control your breath and, in turn, your experience. If it ever feels overwhelming, you can soften your breath. This is part of the journey—meeting your body where it is and honoring its needs. You do not give your power away and are always in control.
5. How Does Breathwork Work?
- Regulation of the Nervous System: By consciously controlling the breath, breathwork can help regulate the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the “fight or flight” response.
- Oxygenation: Breathwork techniques can increase the oxygen levels in the blood, which helps improve overall bodily functions.
- Mind-Body Connection: Breathwork fosters a deeper connection between the mind and body, allowing individuals to become more aware of their physiological and emotional states.
- Conscious Connected Breathing: Continuous, circular breathing without pauses, give access to deep emotional states.
6. What are the benefits of breathwork?
Breathwork offers a wide range of benefits, including:
- Stress Reduction: By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, breathwork helps reduce stress and promote relaxation.
- Emotional Release: Certain breathwork practices can help release suppressed emotions and trauma, leading to emotional healing and greater well-being.
- Improved Mental Clarity: Enhanced oxygen flow to the brain during breathwork can improve concentration, focus, and mental clarity.
- Increased Energy Levels: Breathwork can boost energy levels by improving oxygen delivery to cells and enhancing overall vitality.
- Better Sleep: Practicing breathwork before bedtime can help calm the mind and body, leading to more restful sleep.
- Enhanced Spiritual Connection: Some forms of breathwork, like Holotropic Breathwork, can induce altered states of consciousness, providing deep spiritual insights and a sense of connection to the self or the universe.
- Physical Health: Breathwork can improve respiratory function, strengthen the lungs, reduce blood pressure, and enhance immune system function.
